Equality Statement

Sheffield Women’s Aid was set up in 1974 as a specialist domestic abuse charity run by women for women.  We are proud to provide high quality refuge accommodation and support to women and children across Sheffield.  Our services have been developed in consultation with the women we support and we are a proudly feminist organisation.

Our specialist, secure refuges are dedicated to supporting women and children to live in a safe space and to help them recover from the trauma they have experienced because of the domestic abuse they have been subject to. Following consultation with survivors, we deliver our refuge accommodation as women only (single sex) spaces in accordance with the Equality Act 2010.

We also work in partnership with another specialist agency IDAS (Independent Domestic Abuse Services) in Sheffield.  IDAS provides emergency safe accommodation and support to anyone who has been subject to abuse – including male victims, non-binary and trans people.  Please find out more about IDAS here: https://idas.org.uk/ Together, we work to assess the needs of each individual victim and identify accommodation appropriate for them.

All referrals for domestic abuse accommodation should be made to Sheffield City Council as they assess these initially as part of an agreed housing pathway.  To make a referral contact Sheffield City Council on 0114 273 6306.
