You can refer yourself into Sheffield Women’s Aid (SWA) by either calling Sheffield Housing Solutions (SHS) on 0114 2736306 or by presenting at First Point Howden House, 1 Union Street, Sheffield, S1 2SH.

Other services can also support you to access the refuge by ‘phoning Housing on your behalf and in some cases, SWA can help SHS by doing the assessment on your/their behalf.

Housing will carry out an assessment and then make a referral to the refuge if there is a place available. Sheffield Women’s Aid will talk to you and check that you will be safe in the refuge before making arrangements for you to come.  When you arrive at our site you will be met by a Support Worker, who will greet you, settle you into your new home and offer you food and drinks.

We will offer immediate emotional and practical care and support to you and your children, if you have children with you, and will try to provide anything else that you need – clothing, nappies – anything that you need if we have it.  Your self-contained flat should have everything you need – bedding, towels, toiletries, furniture and kitchen equipment.

We will show you around the building and introduce you to other residents and their children.  You will be given a list of contact numbers and email addresses for your allocated Support Worker, as well as On-Call and emergency numbers, in case you’re in crisis.  To keep you and your family safe, we will take some basic admission details, as well as sign a licence agreement with you, giving you legal protection in your new home.  We will also ask you about any children that are not with you, to see if we can do a ‘safe and well’ check on them to ensure their safety.

The flats are all furnished and decorated to a high standard and have a bathroom and toilet, kitchen area, lounge and bedrooms. There is a satellite TV in all lounges with a large selection of channels catering for most people’s needs. The refuge has WiFi access and personal computers are available to use for free. There is also a free laundry.
